Design A Way Forward

People often say to me, “I can see from A to Z.”  It’s a common cliché and you have probably said or heard it before yourself. I like to visualize it like this:

It’s great to see from A to Z. That’s vision and we all need vision in our organizations and our lives. I also think we need something else to accompany the vision and would like to add something to the A to Z cliche. You have to do B through Y to get there. I like to visualize it like this:

How to get from A to Z

Too often we get caught up in the performance of getting from A to Z. I would even say that I often meet with people who are frustrated because they are struggling to get to Z and can’t figure out why they are not hitting the mark. The reason I like to draw this simple diagram out for people is because it represents how we think…and perhaps set ourselves up for frustration at the least and possibly failure as well. You see, getting from A to Z is never a straight line like some one lane road to success. It’s a more correct mental picture to realize it’s going to be a super highway. I like to visualize it like this:

Learn how to get from A to Z

We set ourselves up for failure, frustration and let down when believe it is all supposed to be the straight shot. That’s all about performance and while performance is important it’s not what the journey is all about for us. The key is to realize all along the way we are being taught what it takes to continue so we need to view the process as learning goals instead of performance goals. I like to visualize it like this:

Learning goals

Life, in business and at home, happens during the ups and downs all along the way. We learn while we are moving along. And guess what? We were made to move with purpose. Unfortunately, I have seen people stop way before making it to their self proclaimed Z. Perhaps they gave up when they were near the bottom. Maybe they quit while they were ahead never realizing there was more ahead for them. By concentrating on the learning process we realize that no matter where we are currently at it’s preparing us for what is to come.

What’s your purpose in life? That’s the Z you are aiming for! Stay encouraged through the successes and setbacks alike as you navigate the ups and downs along the way to the outcome you are striving for. I think Paul said it best in the book of Philippians.

…I’ve learned by now to be quite content whatever my circumstances. I’m just as happy with little as with much, with much as with little. I’ve found the recipe for being happy whether full or hungry, hands full or hands empty. Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am….” The Message, Philippians 4:10-14
